The pumping process itself is quite varied, so it does not seem like a pointless and tedious task. There are no restrictions on arenas as such; the creators made sure that the player does not encounter annoying invisible walls. And the locations themselves are very vast, so there is no feeling of a corridor-like corridor in the game world.
