Kingdom Come: Deliverance begins in a quiet European village where the son of a blacksmith named Henry lives. The Bohemian Civil War seems like a distant possibility until mercenaries massacre his family and destroy everything he has known. The hero starts out with almost no skills: he doesn’t really wield a sword or a bow, and any skirmish can end in failure. The road and overnight stay require planning, because robbers also lie in wait in the dark. From this moment on, the hero sets out to take revenge, but the path turns out to be much longer than expected: service with the nobility, training in combat and slowly returning the name of his family. The story is heavily inspired by real events, and the characters speak and behave according to the times. Crafts and everyday life are no less important than combat: cooking, washing and repairing equipment take up real time. Blacksmithing, alchemy, and thievery are slow to learn but pay off. Realism is felt in everything: the hero wants to eat and sleep, he sweats and gets dirty, and how they will talk to him depends on his appearance. Saving requires a special drink, so mistakes are more significant here than in most RPGs. Preservation is only possible through a drink or sleep, which makes decisions take on weight. A dog companion helps in battle, and the reputation of different settlements may vary. Combat requires preparation: training with a mentor, stances, feints and attention to endurance. The world is open, but does not forgive stupidity, and relationships with residents change with every action. Add-ons added new tasks and expanded the map, and modifications allowed you to change the rules to your taste. For anyone who wants to feel like an ordinary person in a harsh past, this story is suitable.
